BOOK REPORT PROJECT

You are now required to complete a book review of one of the books you have read during this first term. This will need to be submitted during the middle of January (the exact date will be confirmed). However, given the work required I am giving you the full instructions. Please note that the way you set out the required information will vary depending on the type of report you choose (you have a choice between 3 different text types) but the important thing is that you include ALL the necessary details and information. See the following Guidelines and Rubric for details:

CUMULATIVE EXAM

It is now that time of the year, where you must prepare and take the first major assessment under exam conditions - the cumulative exam. As you all know, we have just completed our first unit (Coming of Age) where we looked at and discussed this concept in detail. We must now prepare for the December cumulative exam, and although the exam will not be based on the stories we read during the unit, you will be required to revise the different topics studied throughout this unit, including:
  • Characterisation
  • Conflicts
  • Themes
  • Figurative Language

Exam Preparation
Good preparation and readiness for the exam will give you an advantage and so it is worth noting the information for the exam. You will have 90 minutes to complete the exam. The exam paper has two parts and so you should spend around 45 minutes on each section.
Section A: Reading comprehension (Criterion A)
  • You will be given a text to read, this will be a CoA text, you will then need to answer the questions based on the text.
  • You will have three types of questions in this section DIRECT, INFERENTIAL & EVALUATIVE comprehension questions, using evidence where asked. Please note that the inferential questions will include a section of vocabulary words found within the text.
Section B: Written task (Criterions B, C, and D)
  • You will have to show off your writing skills based on the instructions provided. You will have a choice of questions, please make sure you follow the instructions and the format of the question that you choose. You will have a choice between extended writing answer (using P.E.E) or story writing.
  • You should understand by now that where a question is asking you to answer in detail you need to make sure your answer is well organized and clear. For this, you should be fully aware of the P.E.E structure. For a guide to writing a good P.E.E answer see the following document:

File Not Found
File Not Found

  • If you choose to write the story, then please make sure you follow a good plot structure as reviewed in class, including good detailed rising action, climax, and ending.
  • You must at all times read and follow the instructions carefully, so for example, if it says to write your answers on the exam paper or the paper provided, do so! if it says to write in complete sentences, do so! If it says to count the sentences, do so! If it says to include evidence, do so! This is all reflective of good organization (Criterion B) and can affect other criterions.
  • At the end, before you put your pen down, you should always check your answers by reading over your work and ensuring that your ideas are detailed and clear.

We hope that you will do great and wish you all the best for the cumulative exams... Good luck and God bless!

Cumulative Exam
We have now reached the end of the unit and year! Clearly time flies when you're having fun!!

As you know the exam is in two parts:
Section A - Reading Comprehension (Criterion A)
Section B - Writing (Criterions B, C, and D)

This year the exam will be based on OMAM and so your understanding of the book and the different topics studied in class is important. Look at the class notes on themes, mood, tone, characterisation, etc.

For the first section you can always practice your reading comprehension skills completing the following exercises (NOTE - these are set at different levels, elementary (easy), intermediate (medium) and advanced (difficult). Have a go at these and check your answers using the key on the last page:

Don't forget that although you will be given extracts, you can and should use your own knowledge of the book to answer the questions set. Make sure you allocate sufficient time to complete both questions as each is focused on separate grades. Here is the rubric to get you focusing for the exam:

REMEMBER - Good preparation means success... so get preparing! Good luck!

On Turnintin you can upload your work to the assignment: Summative Assessment - OMAM What happened next?

9G - Reminders for tomorrow!
Hello all,
Just a reminder that I need handed in tomorrow the work that was set while I was in Bogota. That's the answers to questions from Ch.3 and 4 and the questions about John Steinbeck's early life.

If you look at the top of your feed on the Edmodo page, you'll see three tabs/pestañas. One is 'Folders'. In there you'll find all the questions and resources you need.

Please get everything ready to hand in to me tomorrow. All work will be graded and will need to go into your portfolios.

Please have your PDF copies of 'Of Mice and Men' downloaded on your desktop for tomorrow. The internet is really unreliable at school at the moment.
See you tomorrow!
Ms.Esme

9C,9B,9O- FINAL ASSESSMENT- The due date will be issued in class. Failure to hand in your work on time will penalize your final grade.

We are now ready to complete the final assessment for Of Mice and Men. You are expected to:

Imagine that several years after the events in Of Mice and Men have taken place, someone wishes to hear the story of what happened at the ranch.
Choose one of the characters from the book and write an account of the events, and what you imagine happened after the ending Steinbeck wrote, from their point of view. You will need to:
  • complete the graphic organiser - this will be graded for criteria B
  • use your knowledge of the characters, events, ideas and context of OMAM
  • create a specific mood and tone (see below)
  • follow the structure of a story (what was the climax of the book? How can you develop a suitable ending?)
  • write in 1st person
  • write in the past tense (consistently!)
  • write 500-800 words

You will also need to write a reflection on your writing (approx. 250 words). This should include your analysis of:
1. Mood: What mood have you created in your writing? Why have you chosen to create this mood? How have you created it?
2. Tone: What attitude does the narrator have towards the characters and events? Why have you chosen this attitude (based on what evidence from the book)? How have you conveyed this tone?

Key vocabulary

We have been reading and learning some new vocabulary, please remember that the purpose of the vocabulary is to ensure understanding of the text but also to extend your own language and so should not be forgotten.
